Matwons are traditional birth attendants who continue to deliver most babies in rural Haiti. Trusted in their communities, they are often the only care available to pregnant women.

Midwives for Haiti provides training, equipment, and ongoing support so matwons can deliver safer care. Training covers clean birth practices, recognition of danger signs, family planning, and referral pathways. Each matwon receives supplies such as clean birth kits and basic medications, and our team is available to consult on difficult cases.

This program respects tradition while strengthening outcomes, extending lifesaving care to the most remote communities.
